That would be passive or active. 2023 is shaping up to be the year of the flagship floorstanding loudspeaker and Legacy Audio refuses to let DALI, Sonus Faber, and Magico hog the spotlight; the new Focus XD floorstanding speakers are certainly not inexpensive but they don't even come close to the prices we have seen this week so far at High-End Munich 2023.

What makes this speaker different from most others released this year is its versatility with both active and passive setup options.

Full Active Operation: The Focus XD can operate without the need for external amplification via its built-in 750-watt ICEpower® amplifier.

Active and Passive Combined Operation: The Focus XD can also operate in a bi-amplified setup where the internal amplifier can be used to power the bass section while the midrange and tweeter sections can be connected to an external amplifier.

Tip: The Focus XD can be driven full range via its balanced XLR input or bi-amped with an external amp such as the Legacy Audio iV2 using the rear binding posts. Add the Legacy Wavelet II processor and bypass the internal passive bass crossover empowering the system advantages of DSP and Bohmer Room Correction.

The Focus XD incorporates Dual AMT (Air Motion) tweeters. The air displacement and acceleration of the 1 and 4-inch pleated diaphragms are four times larger than conventional tweeters, thus providing greater air and detail.

The Focus XD includes two 7-inch graphene-filled carbon fiber midrange drivers. The drivers incorporate large magnets structure, copper phase plug, and shorting ring. This construction supports precise clarity and warmth in the lower midrange as well as providing needed punch for mid-bass frequencies. The driver layout and crossover design reduce the floor bounce dip that can detract from imaging preciseness.

The Focus XD includes dual 12" subwoofers. Each subwoofer has a rigid aluminum diaphragm high-temp voice coil and optimized suspension. The B6 alignment eliminates DC offset and provides lower extension and weight.

The Legacy Audio Focus XD is priced at $15,200/pair (USD) in standard finishes (premium and exotic finishes subject to extra charge) from Authorized Legacy Audio US Dealers and International Distributors.

"Ah, but a man's reach should exceed his grasp, Or what's a heaven for?" – Browning

Time to get that arm extension surgery I have been putting off because (as if) I needed a "reason".

Legacy makes sense out of "A picture is a poem without words" (Horace). And then you drop the needle on "John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman".

That is what one calls a Legacy Hat Trick.

Hmmmmm…As if being Bi-Amp’d were not enuff for some people…

Legacy makes some of thee mostest loverly speakers there are and that is the truth. What was that about life having surface noise? Turn it up.
