LEWISTON, Maine — A woman has been hospitalized with serious injuries after she was involved in an early morning crash Thursday in Lewiston.

Lewiston police responded to a report of a broken utility pole and downed wires at about 5:15 a.m. at the intersection of Lisbon Street and Prospect Avenue after a box truck reportedly clipped the lines, bringing them down and snapping the pole, according to a news release from the Lewiston Police Department.

While officials were working to remove and replace the utility pole, a woman reportedly drove into the broken utility pole being towed away from the scene.

The pole then went through the woman's windshield, causing serious injuries to the driver, the release stated.

Lisbon Street was closed for most of the day Thursday while crews worked to investigate the crash.

The driver who reportedly crashed into the towed utility pole was brought to Maine Medical Center and was listed in serious condition, according to the release. She has not been identified pending notification of family.

The Lewiston Police Department Accident Reconstruction Team, Maine State Police Commercial Vehicle Unit, and Central Maine Power Crews responded to the incidents, in addition to Lewiston police.
